BenRock hits Benoni, again

Local rockers gathered at the Chimes Tavern this past weekend (June 25).

With drinks flowing and the music blasting, the crowd jammed to bands performing cover songs of international rock bands and original songs.

“This event is musicians doing it for other musicians,” said Glenn Unger, from The Burning.

Six Benoni bands showcased their talent at the second edition of the BenRock Fest.

Lauren Harrison, Winston Slide, The Burning, Monkeyfinger, Fever Dogs and KOI (Kings Of Improg) were some of the bands who were part of the festival.

The first edition was held at the Old Benonians Sports Club, in January.

With a bigger turnout due to the warm weather and the event being outdoors, families came out with their picnic blankets to enjoy some local talent.

Due to the change in venue the second edition was a more intimate set up that gave the audience and the artists an opportunity to interact and sing along to some of their favourite songs.

“We want to promote Benoni bands for Benoni, and promote Benoni’s heritage at the same time,” said Justin Robb, from Monkeyfinger.

Printed T-shirts with band names were also on sale.

The organisers were pleased with the turnout and plan to host a BenRock Fest every six months. They will welcome anyone who may want to provide a venue.
