Wheelie bin roll-out continues, so collect your bin

After the wheelie bin roll-out has been completed in all wards, Benoni is set to have 97 000 of these receptacles, which are meant to make refusal collections easier.

“We were one of the first wards to receive wheelie bins,” said Ward 29’s Clr Imtiaz Loonat.

The roll-out began in Benoni about two years ago and has also started in wards 73 (Mackenzie Park and Rynsoord) and 24 (Jatniel, Rynfield Agricultural Holdings, Rynfield, Fairleads, Crystal Park, Norton Home Estate, Benoni North Agricultural Holdings, Van Ryn Small Holdings, Chief Albert Luthuli Park, Cloverdene and Boat Lake Village).

Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said councillors will be advised prior to the distribution in their ward.

“The roll-out plan will be communicated to the various ward councillors and role players in due course,” said EMM spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini.

He said wards 27 (Morehill, Airfield, Northmead, Ebotse Golf and Country Estate and parts of Rynfield) and 28 (Lakefield, Farrarmere and Western Extension) were due to be given their schedules and residents in these areas would be advised to collect their wheelie bins at the collection points.

The Ward 28 roll-out commenced from Monday (June 20) to Saturday (June 25):

• Saturday’s collection point is: Western Extension Park in Prince’s Avenue; the closest intersection is Bright Street.

The point will be open from 11am until 5pm.

“It must be noted that garden refuse should not be placed in any wheelie bins, according to the by-laws,” said Ward 28 councillor Mary Goby.

Roll-out will commence from Friday (June 24) to Monday (June 27) for residents in Ward 27.

The collection will take place in the field next to the fire station, on Pretoria Road, and the mini garden disposable site on Hospital Road, Northmead, from 10am to 5pm.

“Residents of Chief Albert Luthuli Park did not receive their wheelie bins, because they did not have municipal accounts,” said Clr Stefanie Ueckermann, of Ward 24.

To avoid the disappointment of not receiving a wheelie bin, residents must present:

• Your latest municipal account
• A copy of your ID
• A copy of the ID of the person collecting the wheelie bin on your behalf.

The wheelie bins are distributed at one per home, but if more than one is required, a fee is payable for the additional one.

Each ward has been allocated a certain number of wheelie bins, so residents are encouraged to collect their bin when the roll-out takes place in their ward.

“Wheelie bins will be available at a depot at 4 Golden Drive, Morehill, for those who are not able to collect their bins on the allocated days,” Goby said.

“But this will happen only once the roll-out has been completed in all areas, which is supposed to be by the end of June.”

All residents are advised to collect their wheelie bins, because once the roll-out has been completed in all areas, no bin bags containing home refuse will be collected.
