Instilling the love of reading in children

Do have a passion for reading and children?

If so, the Reading Gogos would like you to join them to help change the lives of many children through reading.

Currently with 25 members, the Gogos (meaning grandma in isiZulu) are looking for more members to join them in this initiative.

“We are always looking for more members to join Reading Gogos,” said Vivienne Ridyard.

The Reading Gogos, consisting of men and women, was started in 2008 after a mobile library sponsored by the Northfield Methodist Church was introduced to Daveyton schools.

Men and women go and read to pupils in five different schools within the Daveyton community on a voluntary basis.

Not only do they read to the children, they play education games, build puzzles and they do arts and crafts to encourage children to view the world differently as well as interact with other people through the English language.

Each gogo uses her own technique to teach the children.

The teachers at schools and the gogos work as a team in ensuring that the they influence the children through reading.

Every week the gogos visit foundation phase pupils from five different schools for an hour on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The schools that they visit include Chief Albert Luthuli Primary One, Daveyton Intermediate School, Letsha Primary School, Katlego Senior Primary School and Sozizwe Primary School.

According to one of the gogos, Kathy Cromer-Wilson, both the teachers and the pupils have grown fond of the gogos and look forward to their visits every week.

Some parents have opted to move their children to the schools where the Reading Gogos go to because they have seen a change in the children since the project started.

If more gogos and mkhulus (meaning grandpa in isiZulu) join this project, the initiative will expand to other schools in Daveyton
