Martial artists shine at Arnold Festival

Students from United Martial Arts International SA (UMAI SA) and World Martial Arts Organisation (WMO) SA, under the guidance of their president and Benonian shihan Aslam Mahomed, and vice-president kancho Alan Mahomed, participated in the martial arts category, at the Arnold Classics Africa event, recently.

The Arnold Sports Festival is an annual multi-sport event, celebrating numerous sporting codes, and is named after the legendary professional body-builder, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

UMAI SA and WMO SA achieved a total of 116 medals, 46 of which are gold, in the categories of traditional/creative forms, points/continuous fighting and weapons forms.

The team placed first in the medal count at this championship.

“This result is astonishing and a great achievement for all our contestants,” said the president.

“Special thanks go out to our team instructors who put in the hard work for the contestants, namely sensei Kiro Febana, shihan Razak Ally, shihan Mohan Hira, sensei Juan Naude, sensei Jacqueline Naude, shihan Jacques Bosch, kancho Alan Mahomed, sensei Fiona Khan, sensei Theoneil du Toit and shihan Aslam Mahomed.

“Our officials made us proud with the constant checking and officiating of the contestants.”

Aslam expressed gratitude to Sajida Mahomed, Sumaiya Cajee, Ebrahim Akoodie, Muhammed Cajee, Yahya Seedat, Feizal Sidat, Hawa Ahroon, Zaida Sidat, Shaeed Bhailall, Zakir Khan, Aslam Razak, Safwaan Razak, Donovan Khatrayan, Mahmood Yacoob and sensei Bongie Ndwandwe.

“Special thanks to Broadway Sweets (Benoni South) for coming to the Benoni dojo and acknowledging the children by providing them with sweets,” he added.

“Our team consists of students from all walks of life, orphans, vulnerable children and children from affluent homes,

“For them to be coming together as martial artists is amazing, this is Ubuntu.”
