She is finding her way

Nicole Truby may be a 19-year-old who is still figuring out which career path to take in life, but she is not wasting her time while deciding.

The Farrarmere resident is currently working to make a difference in children’s lives.

BCT: Tell us about yourself?

NT: I have lived in Farrarmere all my life.

I am the middle child and the only girl, so I was forever being taught “how to be a boy” by my eldest brother, Stanley (23), and had fun playing “mommy” to my younger brother, Jamie (13).

BCT: Growing up here, what makes Benoni unique to you?

NT: I have what I call “Pick n Pay friends”. We have never met outside of Pick n Pay, but we always seem to meet and end up bonding over the simple things in life, like the price of flour.

BCT: While you are figuring out your career choice, what do you do?

NT: Last year I took a gap year to travel. After my travels I came back and looked for work to fund my next trip.

I am a member of St Dunstan’s Cathedral and help to run the children’s church there.

So, my priest thought I would be a good candidate to teach Religious Education at St Dunstan’s Preparatory School.

BCT: What else do you do apart from teaching Religious Education?

NT: I am an au pair and assist at summer camps in America.

After finishing matric in 2014, I was chosen by a summer camp in Florida to assist at the camp; it was wonderful, so I am going back again this year.

BCT: As much as you love working with children, you were also involved in various productions as a child yourself, tell us about that?

NT: I have been involved in Protea Stage Productions since I was seven years old. My first was Oliver Twist. I have done numerous shows over the years.

BCT: You love teaching children, but do you now know what kind of future you see for yourself?

NT: The more I teach and work with children, the more I realise how much I enjoy it and that it is what I am called to do.

I plan to work and study part-time in England, next year, so I can travel some more.

In the long run I would love to be a foundation phase teacher; ideally, Grade Two.
