Top honours for Lions club

Sixteen months ago the Benoni Lakes Lions Club had one member and was facing closure, and now, it now has nine awards to be proud of.

The club received nine out of the 22 awards that were up for grabs at the Lions district and multiple district convention, held in Ballito, from May 6 to 8.

Nick Maré, who became the club’s president in July last year, said that the club had one member in January, 2015.

In June of the same year, the membership grew to 11, and, in November, there were 22 members.

The club won the following categories in the 410B district, which includes 42 clubs and 638 members.

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club won the following awards in their district:

• Club of the Year

• The PDG Rob McClarty “Most Improved Cake Sales by an Individual Club”. They sold over 4 000 Lions Christmas Cakes in four months.

• The club with the Highest Cake Sales.

• Club with the Highest Cake Sales Pro-rata to Membership.

• Social Media Award. The club has over 300 likes on Facebook

• Club Scrapbook of the Year

• Promotion of Growth and Lionism

• Eastern Van Lines Membership Growth.

• “Secretary of the Year”. This award goes to secretary Beaulieu Maré.

Nick said the awards show they are on the right track.

“The awards show the club is doing something right,” said Nick.

Nick said the revamped club appeals to the youth, and is lenient when it comes to members attending meetings and community projects.

“Our philosophy is what you can do, when you can and when you want to do it,” said Nick.
