We park over two parking bays

My wife and I do a lot of shopping at the various malls/shopping centres around Benoni and Boksburg.

Due to the cost of repairing unsightly scratches on our vehicles made by some of our less caring residents, and the fact that parking spaces are narrow, we have taken to using two parking spaces where possible.

This is especially easy at The Falls Spar, which is never full, as opposed to the busy Northmead Square.

We have come across two opposing attitudes:

• People agree wholeheartedly because they have also experienced bad parking (crooked) and scratches and dents caused by the inconsiderate door slammers and similar people.

The number of hard door slamming that we observe is frightening.

Do people slam their house doors? I doubt it.

I’ve also had drivers park so close to my car that I couldn’t get in.

The choice: let their tyres down and leave a note, or wait for them and thank them for their consideration.

• The other attitude is one of annoyance at our daring to take up two spaces when only one is allocated per vehicle.

My answer to that is: how much has this really inconvenienced you?

I suspect very little and that it is your objection to my cheeky action as perceived by yourself.

However, I will continue this practice if I can, in an effort to preserve the condition of this costly purchase and that of my wife.

It is noted that many shoppers take spaces specifically set aside for invalids and the elderly.

Surely this is where the second attitude’s anger should be directed.

I know, because I have a relative in a wheelchair in that situation.
