Race leaves a mess

On Sunday, April 24, a gazebo was erected on the pavement facing our house in Rynfield.

From this gazebo music was played until the last runner of the Benoni Northerns Marathon had passed by.

After packing up, three black dustbin bags, filled to the brim with glass beer bottles, glass Savanna bottles and vodka bottles, etc.,were left on our pavement.

The bags were so heavy from all the glass bottles that they tore when the municipality came the next day to collect the rubbish in our area.

I had to pick up all the bottles from the torn bags and place them in stronger double bags.

So, firstly, I would like to know if it’s legal to set up a gazebo outside my house in a residential area and proceed to party and drink copious amounts of alcohol in public.

Secondly, take your rubbish to your own house or to a recycling area.

Editor’s note: Jan Jordaan, race organiser, replies: “First of all, my apologies for the inconvenience.

“We had a team cleaning up afterwards and I take it that it was an oversight on our side.

“There is not much I can do now, after the race, but I would love to make contact with the complainant to discuss this matter and to have plans in place for next year, to ensure that he/she is not inconvenienced next year.

“You are more than welcome to call me on 011 748 4500 or 082 800 0762, to discuss the matter.”
