‘Young Guns’ put up brave fight

The Benoni Rugby Club's young first XV are fast making a name in the Valke Rugby Union’s elite Peregrine League.

The “Young Guns”, as they have been dubbed, have a combined average age of 23 years and have, despite a few recent losses, proved to be a tough proposition for perennial league super powers.

They proved this again on Saturday, April 23, when they put up a massive fight against the older players who make up Boksburg’s East Rand United (ERU) in a 41-34 loss.

A last-minute try from their opponents broke the hearts of the young team, but they will take confidence from their impressive display.

Despite having to make a few late changes, Benoni came out strongly from the word go.

The game was a true spectacle of club rugby and the players were commended by both sets of spectators for their solid performance.

They still bagged two log points for losing within seven points and for scoring five tries, which moves them up to a comfortable sixth position overall at this stage of the competition.

Try-scorers on the day were Wessel Duvenage (two), Takkie van Staden, Arnold van den Bergh and Ruan du Plessis.

The club’s second team were handed a hefty 49-0 defeat.

Both teams will take a break this coming weekend, before they meet rivals Kempton Park at their Hoërskool Hans Moore home base on Saturday, May 7.

The club has urged all rugby lovers to come on down and support the sides.

The second XV will kick-off their match at 2.40pm and the first side will play at 4pm.
