Getting to know Trevor Hudson

Pastor of Northfield Methodist Church and author, Trevor Hudson, may travel around the world, but his heart still belongs to Benoni, where he can run freely at Homestead Dam, while watching the sun set.

BCT: Tell us about your life growing up.

TH: I was born in Port Elizabeth in 1951; after I matriculated I worked at the Post Office then began an accounting career at a tyre company.

BCT: Why is Benoni unique to you?

TH: The people, the trees and the open water spaces.

BCT: Tell us more about your career. Why did you become a pastor?

TH: I became increasingly discontent with what I was doing in the world of finance.

I took a year off to work in youth ministry and community programmes in Boksburg, where I was influenced by the Rev Paul Welsh.

BCT: You’re not just a pastor, but an author, too. What inspired that?

TH: I was encouraged to write by another author, Gordon McDonald, whom I respected very much. I write with the one simple aim of helping ordinary people to walk more closely with God within their everyday lives.

BCT: What is your favourite book of the 15 you have had published?

Each book has a special place in my own heart. “The Serenity Prayer” has been most widely published in several different countries and languages while my most recent book is “Friendship With God”.

BCT: Benoni may know you as a pastor and an author, but is there any side to you that we do not know about?

TH: I am sure that most people don’t know that I love horses. I wanted to be a jockey in my youth, but I grew too tall, and God had other ideas.

BCT: Tell us a bit more about the man outside of church and writing.

TH: I have been married to Debbie for 37 years. Debbie is a teacher at Willowmore High School.

We are the grateful parents of Joni, married to James, and of Mark, who is married to Marike.

I enjoy running, watching sport and reading.

BCT: You are currently 65 years old, what are your future plans?

TH: If I am able to continue doing what I am presently doing, I will be grateful.

I hope that I am able to spend some more time with Debbie.
