Man arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen vehicle

The Benoni SAPS Central Task Team arrested a suspect on April 19 for being in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

Police arrested the man after receiving information from two suspects who were nabbed after allegedly hijacking a car in Delmas on April 18.

According to the Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Lieut Nomsa Sekele, police are still investigating if all three of the suspects are part of a hijacking syndicate.

The City Times reported that a suspected hijacker was wounded in a shoot-out with police on the Snake Road off-ramp on the N12 on April 18.

Benoni acting Ekurhuleni SAPS Central Cluster commander, Brig Poobalan Subbiah said police officers from Delmas were following a Toyota Tazz after it was hijacked in Delmas before 8pm.

One suspect was wounded and taken to hospital while the other one was detained at the Benoni Police Station.

Both men were charged with possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and attempted murder.

“The newly arrested suspect was detained after one of the suspects informed the police that earlier in the day (April 18) he and his co-accused sold a hijacked vehicle in Delmas,” said Sekele.

“It is alleged that the vehicle was stolen in Kingsway on April 16.”

The man was arrested and detained at the Delmas Police Station.
