Mega Mall plans in the air

Construction of the Benoni Mega Mall is expected to go ahead, its last obstacle being municipal documentation.

The mall was initially scheduled to open its first phase to the public in the first quarter of 2016, but the period passed without construction having started.

A Benoni resident, who did not want to be named, said he heard from a reliable source the plans were cancelled.

Mandela Mokoena, a representative of the development, said the project will definitely still go ahead.

“We will tentatively break ground next year,” said Mokoena.

“The rezoning is done, all that is left now is the municipal documentation around the necessary infrastructure upgrades in the area, to accommodate the development.”

The mall was planned to be built on more than 36ha of land, on the corner of Glen Gory and Elm roads, in Vlakfontein.

The development is set to create 24 000 jobs, direct and indirect.

The developer, Mont Blanc Projects and Properties (Pty) Ltd, last year said on its website that earthworks would commence in the last quarter of 2012.

The information seems to have been taken down since.

In an article published by the City Times in August last year, the metro said the project was only awaiting services contributions payment from the developer.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) was approached for new comment, but none had been received at the time of publication.
