School sport stars shine at St Dunstan’s Easter Sports Festival

School sports festivals have become synonymous with the Easter long weekend in South Africa.

In Benoni, the St Dunstan’s College Easter Sports Festival (held on Thursday, March 24, Saturday, March 26 and Monday, March 28) has become the model for school sports events in Ekurhuleni and a popular event on the local sporting calendar.

Over 50 preparatory and high schools from around the country and neighbouring Zimbabwe battled it out in the sporting disciplines of rugby, netball and hockey, in the third edition of the festival.

What makes the St Dunstan’s version truly unique is the fact that schools from previously disadvantaged areas are given the opportunity to play sports against schools they would normally not play against.

An interesting fixture at this year’s festival was the rugby development match between a Daveyton Invitational XV and a Tembisa XV.

The Daveyton school and their head of rugby, Jaco Coetzer, have been deeply involved with growth of rugby in their community and are reaching out to other townships in Gauteng through the Rural Rugby Development Programme.

This match allowed the players to enjoy a match in a festival environment and to showcase the work that has been done in the township up until this point.

Benoni schools which competed at the festival included the hosts St Dunstan’s, Hoërskool Hans Moore, Benoni High School, Petit High School, Hoërskool Belvedere, Unity Secondary School and Rynfield Primary School.
