Have your cake and eat it

A way to a man’s heart is through taste, according to the next Benoni City Times Cake Bake Competition judge, anyway.

Paul Smith, who is a marketing consultant and has been active in the media industry for over 22 years, never takes for granted that he can have his cake and eat it.

Apart from taste being the key to winning his heart, presentation is a massive contribution to his judgement.

“Accessories like icing, fruit and nuts can be a deal breaker,” Smith said.

“Great presentation can have you tasting a cake just by looking at it.”

He did, however, place a high emphasis on taste as well.

“Taste, taste and taste; a good cake should live up to its name,” he said.

“If it is chocolate, I really want to taste chocolate, consistent, fresh and moist.”

Lastly, Smith wants to have the same feeling he does when he walks into a coffee shop or bakery.

“It is about appeal,” he said.

“Have you ever walked into a coffee shop and looked at the cake display and thought: that looks delicious?” he asked.

The annual Benoni City Times Mother’s Day Cake Bake competition will take place on May 5, at Cherrylane Restaurant, on 14th Avenue, Northmead.
