Meet one of Ekurhuleni’s water ambassadors

Daveyton resident Tshepo Mqoma was recently appointed one of Ekurhuleni’s water ambassadors.

The 28-year-old will be monitoring leakages, evaluating the condition of water meters and any other factors that contribute to water loss in the Daveyton area.

His job includes educating the community on how to save water efficiently.

“I felt happy when I got the job because most young people don’t have jobs,” said Mqoma.

“This will give the youth a chance to do something constructive, because staying at home doing nothing is not right.”

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) launched its Water and Sanitation Community Ambassadors programme at the Boksburg City Hall on March 8.

The programme involves the placement of 100 ambassadors in various communities across Ekurhuleni that have been identified as high water consumption areas.

This includes the Benoni suburbs of Actonville (one ambassador), Daveyton (nine ambassadors), Etwatwa (eight ambassadors) and Wattville (three ambassadors) and is set to take place over a 12-month period, with ambassadors receiving a monthly salary for their services.

Ambassadors will be responsible for collecting data within the community.

The data will then be captured on the municipal database for further intervention.

Ambassadors will also conduct door-to-door visits to create awareness of the importance of preserving water through the “Every Drop Counts” campaign.

To contact the Benoni ambassadors, or for more information, contact the EMM Call Centre on 0860 543 000.
