Be careful of street robberies

The Benoni police are warning the public to be careful when walking on Voortrekker Street after at least three street robberies were reported from mid-January.

Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said the culprits in those cases were three men, one armed with a gun and two with knives.

“They follow the victims into an isolated place then rob them,” said Sekele.

“We urge residents not to carry their valuables such as cellphones and wallets in hand.

“If you withdraw money, make sure no one follows you and don’t walk around with earphones.”

Sekele added that people must report a crime as soon as possible after it has occurred, and not leave it for the following day.

“We need residents to report the crime immediately, this will enable police to search for the perpetrators and also increase police visibility in the area.”
