Benoni runner keeps impressing

Prodigious Benoni runner Robyn Kaltenbrunn (18) completed her first 21km in fine style, by winning the junior women's category at the 15th Dischem Half-Marathon, held at the Bedfordview Virgin Active Club, on Sunday, January 17.

Kaltenbrunn, a KPMG Running Club junior, teamed up with 2015 Two Oceans Marathon and 2015 Comrades Marathon winner Caroline Wöstmann, who paced the young athlete through her debut half-marathon.

When asked what it was like to have an accomplished runner like Wöstmann setting the pace for her, the former Benoni High School pupil said: “It is good to have someone as talented and inspiring as Caroline running with me and encouraging me the entire way, making sure that I didn’t walk.”

Her first half-marathon was no walk in the park either, considering she had to brave it with a troublesome injury.

“It was frustrating in the beginning, because I have never had an injury, but I took the run easy and made sure I was comfortable while running,” she explained.

Kaltenbrunn said that it felt extremely good to finish her first 21km as the first junior woman home.

“I trained hard for my first 21km and I was proud of myself,” she said.

She will now be putting in the hard graft, with her sights set on running the Two Oceans half-marathon in March, with the goal of running that race in under one hour and 25 minutes, and to finish as the first junior.

With regards to being a part of the talent-infested and exciting KPMG Running Team, Kaltenbrunn commented: “It’s great to have people like the KPMG management who encourage juniors in athletics and cross-country.

“They have given us good opportunities and I am incredibly lucky to have them behind me.”
