Child who was knocked down discharged from hospital

A mother will avoid the stretch of road where her 19-month-old son was hit by a car “at all costs”.

Rozelle Blanché and her husband, Renier, were pushing their son, Raidon, in a pram, along Eva Road, Fairleads, on January 6, when a vehicle crashed into the pram.

The trio were making their way back home after they had fed ducks at Country View – a walk they embark on every evening from their nearby home.

The mother and father were pushing the pram on the grass, when the driver of a BMW lost control of the vehicle on the sharp bend.

“Before I could completely remove Raidon, he [the driver] was on top of us,” said Rozelle.

“The pram fell over and Raidon was still in it.

“The pram crashed into me and fell over.”

Rozelle said the driver just drove off after the incident.

“I thought my child was gone,” added Rozelle.

“For half a minute he was quiet, then all of a sudden he burst into screams.”

The mother ran into the road to flag down a bakkie driver, jumped on the back and told the man to take her to the Netcare Linmed Hospital.

Raidon has a leg brace after he sustained soft tissue damage in his right knee and received 14 stitches in his right shoulder.

He was discharged from hospital on Friday.

Rozelle told the City Times on Friday that she was still affected by the ordeal.

“I drove past yesterday (January 7) and it just flashes back and I see this white car hitting my child,” she said.

Rozelle and Renier are undergoing counselling following the incident.

The driver of the car was allegedly underage.

The SAPS has registered a hit-and-run case.

Police could not confirm whether any arrests had been made at the time of going to print.
