Benoni High pupil walks away with eight distinctions

Beside breaking the A-barrier, eight times, Hiresha Naidoo is a high school graduate you don't want to face in a straight fight.

The Benoni High School pupil received eight distinctions in English home language, Afrikaans first additional language, life orientation, mathematics, accounting, economics, physical science and advanced mathematics.

She achieved a 91.63 per cent average.

Naidoo expressed her excitement surrounding the results.

“Before they came out I was quite nervous, as I doubted a few subjects,” she said.

“I had aimed for distinctions, so it was great when the news came out.”

How did you achieve such high scores in matric?

“By working consistently throughout the year and using a lot of past papers to study,” said Naidoo.

This year, Naidoo will read towards an accounting degree at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

After her studies, she hopes to find a job at a good firm, then work herself up from there.

The Mackenzie Park resident was convinced it was the right choice for her after she achieved 100 per cent for accounting in the final matric examinations.

“I became interested in accounting after seeing my uncle, who is an accountant, at work,” she said.

How do you feel you will perform at university?

“I’m confident I’ll do good at university, but I also realise it will be a lot of hard work.”

Outside academics, she also participated in public speaking in the Eisteddfod competitions held at the school as well as extra-curricular martial arts.

Naidoo learned karate from Grade Five to 10, but as it became too time consuming, she decided to quit and focus more on her studies.

“I would like to return to it, now that matric is done; hopefully I can balance my tertiary studies with karate,” said the youngster.

The 18-year-old said her younger sister, Yethisha, also performed well in school, receiving eight distinctions in Grade Nine last year.

Hiresha herself has always been a star in school.

She maintained the top spot among the 10 highest academic achievers since starting her high school career in Grade Eight.

Her advice to the matrics of 2016 is to work consistently and hard.

“Use past papers to study and work well with the teachers,” she added.
