We are becoming younger

My wife and I received our normal electricity account in November only to find out that (and here is the miracle) we have become younger, according to the lady that was so helpful when we enquired why we were paying full rates and taxes.

The municipality, in their wisdom, had somehow decided that we were (possibly) too young to be pensioners, thus we lost our pensioner’s discount.

To make matters worse, even though my wife is over 70 and I am over 60 (both of us receive government social pensions), we have lost that discount as well.

The helpful young lady then looked up our status on the computer and lo and behold, we were still registered as social pensioners etc.

She assured us that this mistake was known and that it would be rectified on our next account.

Satisfied, we went away with our faith restored in human nature.

But, our next statement arrived, and not only is the mistake not rectified, but it has been made a second time.

We are still in the “young” category.

When (or if) this problem is rectified, who will pay the re-connection fees, the interest and the delivery of the cut-off notice cost?

The young lady very carefully wrote on our account how much we should pay for the November account instead of what was being asked, so should we do the same again for the December payment?

When will the dreaded electricity disconnection take place, as we will be “seen” to owe more than R2 000 in so-called arrears?

Would there be other pensioners in the same boat as ourselves?
