Thousands of bikers at Toy Run

Thousands of toys were juxtaposed against almost as many motorcycles at the 33rd Motorcycle Toy Run, on Sunday, November 29.

The event was hosted for the fifth consecutive year at the Benoni Northerns Sports Grounds, in Northmead and, by 11am, most of Northerns was filled by parked motorcycles.

The entry fee for the event was at least one toy, which eventually amounted to 23 700 donated toys.

With a sea of eye candy for petrol heads, the event attracted a vast crowd throughout the day, despite the hot weather.

Beside the pistons and wheels, Northerns featured to a large number of stalls, a beer garden and a stage with live entertainment.

Former Jacaranda FM DJ Paul Rotherham was the master of ceremonies and kept the crowd laughing between the performances of the two bands, Tryst and Back Bone.

The bikes departed from four mass starting points at 9am:

  •  Irene Village Mall
  •  The Blockhouse Garage
  •  Carnival City Casino
  •  Silverstar Casino

Benoni CPF, Metro Police, Gauteng Traffic Police and volunteers facilitated the safe flow of the more than 20 000 bikes to the venue.

Organisers Pete Beart and Graeme Cartwright said they were very grateful to the bikers, participating organisations and local community members.

Cartwright wanted to apologise for the road closures and traffic delays caused by the event.

The toys will be distributed by the organisers, Rotary Club, Lions International and Round Table Gauteng to a number of pre-approved charity organisations.
