Mayor declares disaster following hailstorm

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mondli Gungubele has signed a declaration of disaster, following the hailstorm that struck Ekurhuleni on November 16.

According to Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni spokesperson, the official declaration of disaster will assist in unlocking resources.

“This will enable the implementation of long-term assistance to bring permanent relief to the affected residents,” he said.

The focus for Disaster and Emergency personnel will shift from providing immediate temporary relief, to a reconstruction phase.

This phase will see permanent repairs being implemented to community’s homes.

Task team members have, thus far, identified 3 386 households whose roofs were blown off, windows and structures damaged.

So far, temporary repairs to affected households in Etwatwa and Southern parts of Ekurhuleni have been completed, according to Gadebe.
