A mouth-watering time at Jerry’s Del Mar Café

Usually, when I think of the term “healthy food” the image of bunny food appears in my mind. At Jerry’s Del Mar Café this was certainly not the case ...

I recently went for lunch with a guest at Jerry’s on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

I felt like I was on holiday when I stepped into the cafe as everything, from the decor to the beach-like bar added to the relaxing vibe that you would find on a sunny day at the beach.

However, I came with a hungry stomach and what was of interest to me was what the menu had to offer.

I started off with a delicious creamy, white hot chocolate and my partner with a filter coffee, while we waited for our food.

Our waitress was Sarafina Chanza, who assisted us with a smile.

I ordered a chicken schnitzel — a crumbed chicken breast with a golden, crispy crust and a soft and juicy centre, just as I like it.

It was covered in a delicious cheese sauce and served with crispy golden fries.

Francois decided on the chicken breast, stuffed with cream spinach.

This, too, was covered in a creamy thick layer of cheese sauce and served with fries.

He said that the chicken was perfectly seasoned and the cream spinach complimented the taste.

After this the sweet tooth had spoken and we couldn’t resist ordering a piece of one of the tempting cakes and tarts on display.

I indulged in a slice of lemon meringue tart, which was fresh and sweet, with a tangy taste.

My guest ordered a slice of the carrot cake.

It was moist and tasty, not too sweet and covered with creamy icing.

All the cakes are home-made.

Owner Jerry Cindi has been in the food industry for 17 years and is involved in the preparation of the food, as the dishes are prepared according to his own recipes.

“I make food from the heart,” he said passionately.

He explained that serving healthy food is important to him.

All the dishes are prepared from scratch and fresh new ingredients are ordered every day.

Most of the food is prepared in olive oil and they only use free-range chicken.

I was impressed at how much his interest lies with his customers.

He welcomed each customer personally, knowing more than a few by their first names.

“When you step in here, you become family,” he added.

The café has a play room where children can enjoy themselves, while still being in sight of their parents.

It also has a cosy events area, which can be used for private parties and functions.

Jerry’s Del Mar Café is situated in the Cosmopolitan Centre,in Northmead, and is easy to get to for a breakfast or lunch. TB
