Water sales skyrocket for Northmead business

Northmead-based Oasis Water has been busier than usual over the past two days, due to the recent water shortages in parts of Gauteng.

Store owner Sam Cawood said she has sold 50 000l of water in two days (November 10 and 11), where she usually sells that amount in a entire month.

The demand for water has resulted in Cawood having to call in family members to assist her at the shop. Customers have come as far as Morningside and Sandton to buy water at her store.

Cawood believes customers are coming from afar due to there being no water available in those parts of Johannesburg.

“People are buying in bulk, everyone is stocking up,” said Cawood.

“I hope the country sorts out its water problems soon.”

Stefan Schoeman was one of the customers who was stocking up on water.

The Northmead resident bought 50l of water on November 11.

Schoeman said: “I’m worried that I won’t have water to drink tomorrow (November 12).”

There are currently no water restrictions in Ekurhuleni.
