Ricky Coelho, the chairperson of Country View, has, since Sunday, been on a mission to save fish at the Sandpan.

On Sunday, people arrived at the pan from far and wide after Coelho asked the community for assistance in relocating fish.

Volunteers arrived with buckets and nets.

The fish were relocated to another body of water at the pan, which contains cooler, deeper water.

The deaths are believed to be a result of the hot weather, which is quickly reducing water levels and starving the shallow water of oxygen.

Coelho was saddened by the state of the pan this afternoon.

“It’s worse than before; it’s bad, very bad,” he told the City Times.

“I was pulling fish out of the water at 4.15am this morning.”

Coelho told the City Times about 1 500 fish have died, while 600 have been rescued since Sunday.

The community is urged to assist in relocating fish, which should prevent further deaths.

To get involved, contact Coelho on 083 765 0816.

Let the City Times know whether you will assist by calling 011 425 0164.
