WATCH: Fish die at Sandpan as drought strikes

A second day of efforts are underway to save hundreds of fish from dying at the Sandpan, in the Rynfield Agricultural Holdings.

VIDEO:

People from as far as Sandton descended on the pan yesterday, after the chairperson of Country View, Ricky Coelho, put out an appeal to people to assist in saving the fish.

Ricky and his wife, Angelina, were walking at the pan on Sunday when they noticed dead fish on the shores.

Over 100 people responded with nets and buckets, which they used to relocate the carp from several areas of the pan into a deeper body of water at the pan.

The drought has lead to the water receding as far back as 50m, with several small dams being formed within the entire area.

Ricky told the City Times this morning that he believes the carp are dying as a result of the drought, which has starved the water in the pan of oxygen.

He said 500 fish were relocated yesterday, although it was too late for about 800 to 1  000.
