Public educated on highway safety

Law enforcement conducted an operation to educate pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on the dangers and wrongdoings on highways.

The operation was held between the Kingsway and Etwatwa turnoffs onto and off the N12 highway, on October 30.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, said several pedestrians and cyclists have been killed on this stretch of road in the past.

“Law enforcers conducted a joint operation aimed at educating pedestrians and cyclists who wrongly use the freeway about its pitfalls – a freeway meant only for fast moving motor vehicles,” said Kgasago.

EMPD, SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police, Sanral, Tshwane and Johannesburg Metro Police and National Traffic Police were involved in the operation.

Educational pamphlets were distributed to all road users.

Nine pedestrians were issued with fines for being on the freeway, two bicycles were impounded and 39 fines issued for various offences.

More than 50 vehicles were stopped and searched.

“This joint pedestrian safety campaign will be conducted at least once a month to sensitise the pedestrians and cyclists in the area that it is taboo to use the freeway as well as to the dangers they expose themselves to, as motor vehicles on the freeway travel at high speeds,” said Kgasago.

“The educational pamphlets were also handed to motorists imploring them to drive with caution on this stretch of the freeway and to always be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists.”
