Police warn public following rapes

The Benoni SAPS warns all women to be on the lookout when they are walking near the open field between Main Reef Road and Voortrekker Street, after two cases of rape were reported.

The first incident occurred on Tuesday, October 20, at about 7.30am.

“It is alleged that the victim was walking along Main Reef Road, towards Mackenzie Park, when a man approached her from behind and threatened her with a knife,” said Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson.

“The man then ordered her to go with him to the bushes, where he raped her.

“Investigations revealed that a similar case, with the same modus operandi, was reported in June.”

Sekele said another incident occurred on Saturday, October 26, at about 3am, in Voortrekker Street, in the same field.

“Allegedly the victim was with her friends at the corner of Harpur Avenue and Tom Jones Street, when an unknown man approached and started hitting her,” said Sekele.

“He then instructed her to follow him and not to scream or he would kill her.

“She followed him to an open field in Voortrekker Street, close to the taxi rank, where he raped her.”

Sekele said the police are appealing to women not to roam around at night or in the early mornings, as they can fall victim to the perpetrator.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing and no arrests had been made at the time of publishing.
