Boy (7) dies after being run over

A seven-year-old boy died en route to hospital last night (October 20), after he was run over by a vehicle in Crystal Park.

The incident happened on Jenkins Road, at around 6pm.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago said angry community members confronted the 32-year-old motorist after the incident.

The EMPD was called to the scene to quell the tension.

Kgasago said the community have been calling for traffic calming measures on the road for several months, and took matters into their own hands once the boy was knocked down.

The youngster was rushed to the Far East Rand Hospital and was certified dead on arrival.

“Community members claimed that they had made several requests for speed humps to be erected on Jenkins Road, but to no avail,” said Kgasago.

“They started to dig across the road as a speed calming measure.”

The driver of the vehicle was found to not have a valid driver’s licence.

A culpable homicide case has been opened against the driver at the Crystal Park Police Station.

The exact details of the incident are not yet known.

Clr Stefanie Kruger, of Ward 24, said there are no road signs on the road.
