Giving women hope

With October being Cancer Month, the women from Wings of Hope Cancer Support group met at the Vanilla Bean Coffee Shop, on Second Street, in Northmead, on Saturday (October 10).

The theme for the day was pink and white.

The initiative was started by a group of women who are all cancer survivors and driven to help women who are going through the same journey.

“We provide women with support according to their needs; it doesn’t just stop with breast cancer,” said Sheena Williamson, head of the Benoni branch.

Williamson mentioned how members of the group accompany patients to the oncology centre and organise home visits to show patients that someone is there for them.

Their aim is to show cancer patients that life doesn’t stop with cancer, there is hope because cancer can be beaten.

This is the third year the group has been operating as the Benoni branch, and there is a ”mother branch” in Johannesburg.

“We’ve just had our third birthday and we’ve been become a close-knit community,” Williamson said.

Each woman relates to the others, knowing they have been on the same journey.

Guest speaker Bev du Toit gave a motivational talk, while local band Uriah kept the crowd entertained.

“The event was amazing, the women are always welcome here,” said Stephanie Vingos-Latsky, co-owner of Vanilla Bean.

“It was a privilege for us to have them and we hope to host many more events together.”

Volunteers and donations are welcomed by the group.
