Miss Deaf SA finalist from Daveyton

Daveyton resident Zodwa "Barbara" Vakele is one of 10 finalists in this year's Miss Deaf South Africa pageant.

The 26-year-old was born deaf and is encouraging younger generations to have self-esteem and purse their dreams.

“We need to dream big because your dreams are the ones that keep you going daily,” she said.

The finalists will compete for the title in a gala event to be held on October 2, at the Pretoria Barnyard Theatre.

Miss Deaf SA media coordinator, Tracey Ruff, said a number of the finalists want sign language introduced as both a subject in schools and as one of South Africa’s official languages.

“All the contestants have wonderful ideas to inspire, empower and encourage not only the deaf community, but the hearing community too,” said Ruff.

People who would like to donate to the pageant can SMS “MDS SA” to 48748.

Each SMS costs R10.
