Benoni SAPS acting station commander, Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen, said people must do the following:
- Secure your property during the day and night;
- Activate security systems and secure doors and windows when you leave home;
- Screen your employees to check whether they have a criminal record;
- Report suspicious-looking people and activities to police and security companies;
- Make an effort to get to know your neighbours;
- Brief your family to be vigilant of criminals;
- Be particularly cautious of crime in the last two weeks of the month as criminals are more likely to prey on people who have received their salaries;
- Do not withdraw large sums of money from banks or ATMs;
- Continually change your route when visiting banks and ATMs;
- Try not to attend function venues where there is little security;
- Do not leave valuables laying around which could be in sight of criminals;
- Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays have high incidents of housebreakings and;
- Criminals are sometimes well dressed and drive flashy cars
