Police warn public what to look out for

Police have provided some tips for people to heed to reduce their chances of falling victim to crime.

Benoni SAPS acting station commander, Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen, said people must do the following:

  •  Secure your property during the day and night;
  •  Activate security systems and secure doors and windows when you leave home;
  •  Screen your employees to check whether they have a criminal record;
  •  Report suspicious-looking people and activities to police and security companies;
  •  Make an effort to get to know your neighbours;
  •  Brief your family to be vigilant of criminals;
  •  Be particularly cautious of crime in the last two weeks of the month as criminals are more likely to prey on people who have received their salaries;
  •  Do not withdraw large sums of money from banks or ATMs;
  •  Continually change your route when visiting banks and ATMs;
  •  Try not to attend function venues where there is little security;
  •  Do not leave valuables laying around which could be in sight of criminals;
  •  Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays have high incidents of housebreakings and;
  •  Criminals are sometimes well dressed and drive flashy cars
