Mega Mall ‘negotiations’ delay construction

The developers of the Benoni Mega Mall are tight-lipped on when ground will be broken to officially kick off the R6-billion project.

Work has not yet started on the centre, which is to be built on the corner of Glen Gory Road and Elm Road, in the Benoni Agricultural Holdings.

The development is set to create 24 000 direct and indirect jobs.

The developer, Mont Blanc Projects and Properties (Pty) Ltd, said on their website (www.mbpp.co.za) that earthworks would commence in the last quarter of 2012.

Construction was due to start in early 2013 and phase one was scheduled for market entry during the first quarter of 2016.

However, no visible construction work has been noticed.

When the development manager, Mandela Mokoena, was asked about the progress, he said: “It is on course and it will be happening in due course.”

He remained mum on what still needed to be done before construction could begin.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe said council is awaiting payment before construction may begin.

“From a town planning point of view, the application was approved and proclaimed,” he added.

“However, the applicant is still in negotiations for the services agreement with the council.

“The project may commence when all services contributions have been paid to council; SDPs, with building plans, must have been signed prior to construction.”

Gadebe did not say when the negotiations would be finalised.
