UPDATE: Cyclist flung nearly 5m after hitting pothole

A 61-year-old cyclist thought he had broken his arm when he rode his bicycle through a pothole, causing him to land nearly 5m from the hole.

Norman Milne was cycling on Willow Road, in the Benoni Agricultural Holdings (BAH), on Sunday, when he mistakenly rode into a pothole which was concealed in a shadow.

The Crystal Park resident said the hole was not overly big.

He was flung over the handlebars.

“When I hit the ground I thought I had broken my arm,” said Milne.

“I sat there, saying help, help.”

A motorist stopped to help and called paramedics.

Milne said he will jump back on his bike, despite the shocking state of roads.

“I cycle in the BAH because it’s quiet, but that is the risk you run, because the state of roads there are not the same as in the busy areas,” he added.

Milne sustained lacerations and received six stitches.

His right eye was cut and is swollen closed as a result of the glasses he was wearing when he crashed.
