UPDATE: Brothers shot for R110

The robbers who fired seven shots, wounding two brothers in the early hours of August 5, fled the scene with R110, a credit card and ID book.

This is according to *Alex, who employs one of the brothers, and who spoke on condition of not being named or the location of the crime scene being specified, as he felt this would have negative repercussions for the victims.

The victims, aged 47 and 52, were asleep in their home in the vicinity of Brentwood Park when their front door was opened with a crowbar.

“According to the mother of the two victims, they went to bed at 9.30pm and, at around 3am, she heard a noise coming from the passage,” said Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

Sekele said the mother stood up, opened her bedroom door and saw her sons lying on the floor with two armed men standing next to them.

Alex said the brothers were awakened by a noise in the lounge and went to investigate, and were confronted by two robbers.

He said a fist fight between the four ensued, after which the gunmen opened fire.

The robbers allegedly proceeded to the room of the victims’ mother, who is 80 years old, and took cash from her handbag, her credit card and ID document.

He said her saving grace was that her handbag was on her bedside table, as he feels she would have been assaulted had the robbers not seen the handbag.

A bullet grazed the head of the 47-year-old victim, who sustained a wound to his head and shoulder.

He was discharged from hospital the morning of the incident, with his stroke of luck at not dying described as an “absolute miracle” by Alex.

The 52-year-old brother was shot five times and was, on Friday, in a stable condition in the Union Hospital, in Alberton, having been taken off a ventilator.

Alex told the City Times he was shocked by the bloody scene when he arrived at the house within minutes of the attack.

“You have never seen anything like it,” he said.

He added that the floor, light switches and walls were covered in blood.

Sekele said a case of house robbery and attempted murder is being investigated.

No arrests had been made at the time of going to press.

*Alex not his real name.
