Sewage poses threat to Korsman Bird Sanctuary

Sewage running out of a manhole on the corner of Edward Street and Victoria Avenue, in Western Extension, poses a serious threat to the environment, according to Ward 28 Clr Mary Goby.

Goby said the sewage has been flowing into the Korsman Bird Sanctuary for about a month, with no action being taken.

Chairperson of the Korsman Conservancy, Jane Trembath, said: “I have reported this matter three times and have received three reference numbers, but nothing has been done.”

She has been working with Goby in an attempt to resolve the issue.

Goby said an email has been sent to the municipality, with no response on the matter.

“Ekurhuleni has done nothing about this matter, we have been waiting for a response for over a month,” said the councillor.

Protecting the environment is the main concern for both Goby and Trembath, knowing that wildlife and people are being affected due to the health risks the sewage is causing.

Trembath said litter in the area has also become an issue.

She added that it cannot be picked up, because it is in the pool of sewage.

Residents have requested a meeting with council to discuss possible action that can be taken to stop the leakage from adding further damage to the area and the pan.
