Paying homage to extravagance

I recently watched a beautiful show, with beautiful people and beautiful choreography.

The show was called (you guessed it) Beautiful.

Not the kind of show I would usually go to, but it was something different and surprising all the way.

I’ll admit, I’m usually more prone to enjoy story-driven productions, while this is anything but.

The show lacks a story, but fulfils its purpose nonetheless, reaching out to the audience aesthetically, instead of emotionally.

The great thing about art is that there are no rules and in the case of shows, this means the director can focus either on story, performance or the look and feel of it.

A collection of more than 20 classic and contemporary hits accompanied the cast in this extravaganza, with each song leading almost directly into the next.

With two female and two male lead singers, the audience was mesmerised by the talent and uniqueness of each of the vocalists.

They led a troupe of as many as 20 dancers, adorned with beautifully elaborate costumes and with a dancing talent few people can match.

Although there were a few discrepancies in the synchronisation between dancers, it didn’t take away from the show itself.

In addition to the showcase of group talent, the most talented dancers had a few chances to show off their elegance, with a wonderfully lit ballet double duet and a three-person tango stealing the show.

The production ended on a high note, with the entire group uniting for a grand finale on a large set, following an homage to Marilyn Monroe’s Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.

The show included 600 costumes, 300 000 rhinestones, 40 000 feathers and 50 tons of scenery.

Beautiful will run in the Theatre of Marcellus, at Emperors Palace, until August 9.

Parental guidance is advised for anyone under the age of 16.
