Don’t delay police reaction

By not first reporting crime to police, valuable reaction time, lookouts and utilisation of SAPS resources are delayed.

According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele, there are cases where people bypass the police and first report incidents to security companies.

“Security companies are reactive; they access their clients’ situation and only then report to the SAPS,” she said.

“This time delay is sometimes deliberate by individual security companies, to make the SAPS look bad.

“The motive behind this is purely business interest and profit by security companies.”

Sekele added that there are security companies who cooperate with the police.

“The SAPS is responsible for crime prevention, detection and investigation and must always be the first receivers and responders to crime and crime information,” she explained.

“The SAPS and security companies must work closely in ensuring the community is safe.”

All crime must be reported to 10111, under whose control all police vehicles are.

Calls are recorded and vehicles dispatched, and an incident report (IR) number is allocated.

Records are kept on vehicle response times and these results are communicated to 10111.
