‘Dragging’ cops plead not guilty

The nine Daveyton policemen accused of dragging Mido Macia to his death, in 2013, said his handcuffs accidentally caught onto the police van, during the first day of the trial on Tuesday, July 28.

The police officers pleaded not guilty to charges of murder in the North Gauteng High Court.

State witness Lindiwe Ngwenya was cross-examined by defense lawyer, Marius van Wyngaardt.

Van Wyngaardt told the court Macia’s handcuffs accidentally caught on the inside of the van, as he was attempting to jump out, but this was disputed by Ngwenya, who said Macia was never taken aboard the van.

Van Wyngaardt went on to say that the accused, who was driving the police van at the time, didn’t know Macia had hooked to the vehicle.

Ngwenya responded by saying another police van was behind the vehicle and could have warned the driver by means of a siren.

Macia died in a holding cell on February 26, 2013, several hours after the alleged incident had taken place.
