Player milestones eclipse defeat

Despite going 2-1 down in their Southern Gauteng Hockey Association (SGHA) Winter Men’s Performance Reserve League clash, in Randburg, on Saturday, July 25, individual player milestones dimmed out the defeat for Benoni Northerns' men’s first hockey side.

In their match against Morningside Country Club (MCC), long-serving Northerns forward Michael Veliotes celebrated a magnificent 150 appearances for the club, while Tyron Lloyd played his 50th match for the Benoni outfit.

On his landmark achievement, Veliotes commented: “It has been a great personal journey for me.

“I am proud to have played this many games for the best hockey side on the East Rand.”

  • Meanwhile, the Benoni Northerns men’s second hockey side, playing in the SGHA Winter Men’s Fourth League, overcame St Martin’s Alumni 2-1 to maintain a strong position in the league.
