Young siblings seriously hurt by stray bullet(s)

Two siblings were in a serious but stable condition this morning (July 19) after they were injured by a stray bullet(s) in the N12 informal settlement.

It is unclear whether they were injured by the same bullet.

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the girls, aged seven and 11, were playing in their yard when the incident occurred at around 10.30am.

Sekele said police believe the bullet(s) was fired by illegal miners in the area.

“Both girls sustained wounds on their lower body and were taken to the Tambo Memorial Hospital in a serious but stable condition,” said Sekele.

A case of attempted murder was opened at the Crystal Park Police Station.

No arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, the City Times reported earlier this year of eight people who were gunned down – including an 18-month-old baby – in a Chief Albert Luthuli Park tuck shop on March 14.

The incident was believed to be linked to illegal miners in the area.
