Mortimer swings to success

Rynfield Primary School pupil Matthew Mortimer (12) left South African shores on Tuesday, July 14, to represent South Africa at the Veritas World Junior International Junior Golf Festival, from July 18 to 24, in Los Angeles, in the USA.

The youngster represented the country at the US Kids Golf European Championship, in Scotland, last year.

The Benoni Country Club and Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club youngster, who started playing golf at the tender age of five, on the greens and fairways of Glendower, is hoping that his excellent short game will stand him in good stead in LA.

He has also been paying special attention to his driving ahead of the championships.

“I expect it to be hard [in LA], because I will be playing off men’s tees in a competition for the first time, and without a caddy,” he said.

“I am not intimidated to play off the men’s tees, because I have played off them a few times with my dad and did quite well.”

Mortimer said that since Scotland he has been working hard on his game and on his attitude.

“I have learned to be a lot more patient, too,” he added.

The youngster thanked his grandfather, Adrian Eve, for helping to finance the trip.
