UPDATE: Driver charged with culpable homicide following Rynfield accident

The driver of a Volvo, who was involved in an accident which claimed the life of a 63-year-old motorist, will appear in court today on a charge of culpable homicide.

The suspect will make his first appearance in the Benoni Magistrates Court.

The head-on collision, involving a Fiat Uno and Volvo, occurred at the intersection of Uys Street and Hull Road, Rynfield at around 6.15pm, on July 8.

Netcare 911 paramedics heard the massive crash and ran outside to investigate and noticed that two motor vehicles collided head-on at the intersection,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann.

“Upon investigation of the occupants from the vehicles, paramedics found the driver of one of the vehicles in a critical condition and entrapped in his vehicle.

“Sadly the critically injured man’s condition deteriorated and he passed away at the scene due to the extensive injuries sustained during the crash.”

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, told the City Times on the evening of the accident that the man was arrested after the accident and taken to the Metro Police head office for the North region in Tembisa for blood tests.

The tests will determine whether the man was over the legal driving alcohol limit.

Const Zunickha Essakjee, Benoni SAPS communication officer, said police are investigating the matter and have not received the results for the blood tests.
