Educate yourself on housebreakings

On Wednesday, June 3, members of the Crystal Park SAPS, sector mangers, social crime prevention officers, patrollers and trauma centre volunteers, embarked on a door-to-door crime awareness campaign.

The aim of of the campaign was to inform the community of recent housebreakings in the area.

Pamphlets containing safety tips were handed out to the residents.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said the Crystal Park SAPS is currently experiencing a high volume of housebreaking reports

Maritz supplied the following tips to reduce people’s chances of falling victim to the crime:

  •  Always ensure that doors are properly closed and locked and that windows are closed when you are not at home.
  •  If you leave your residence for a long period, inform your family or neighbours of your whereabouts, in order for them to report all suspicious people and vehicles.
  • Vary your daily routine.
  •  If you are unsure about the security status of your home after returning from work or a visit, do not enter your property.
  •  Report suspicious behaviour and information to the SAPS immediately.
  •  Clear the areas around your gate of bushes and other hiding places.
  • Do not employ casual workers without a reference. Keep copies of all your employees’ IDs.
  •  Ensure that you have a good relationship with your neighbours, so that you will be in a good position to support and help each other.
  •  Keys to the safe must be kept on the person.
  •  Never hide any keys in obvious places, such as in pot plants or under doormats.
  •  Never allow strangers to handle keys or look at key numbers.
  •  Change locks when keys are lost.
  •  Never leave windows open during the day when you are not at home.
