Business owners asked to close doors following xenophobia rumours

Public Order Police asked foreign-owned shops in parts of Actonville and Wattville to close their doors this morning (April 16).

“People were asked to close their shops as a precautionary measure,” said Actonville Police Station spokesperson WO Ramothakhi Maqabe.

He said several shops on Mayet Drive and Singh Street closed their doors this morning, as well as some in Wattville.

Maqabe said the decision to ask for the closure came after rumours circulated that foreigners would be attacked in the area.

Police addressed around 100 people who congregated at the Actonville Hostel, on Styx Road, this morning.

Maqabe said the crowd dispersed after being told their gathering was illegal.

The situation has since calmed down, some SAPS members have left the scene, this is after rubber bullets and tear gas had been fired.
