Ten gunned down at tavern, seven die

Seven people, including an 18-month-old baby, died when 10 people were gunned down in the N12 informal settlement last night (March 14).

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said police received a call from a Chief Albert Luthuli Park community member at around 9.20pm last night informing them of the shooting.

Sekele said police suspect the incident is related to illegal mining.

Police responded to the call and found ten victims in and around a shack, which had been converted to a tavern and kiosk.

The liquor outlet was operating illegally as it did not have a permit.

The 18-month-old child and her mother, along with another woman, were among the dead outside the tavern.

A man’s body was also discovered on the street opposite the business.

Another corpse was found underneath a bed, inside the shack.

The body of the female owner of the establishment and that of another woman were found were also found inside the shack.

Sekele said one of the victims died in the Far East Rand Hospital while another died in an ambulance on the scene.

More than 50 spent bullet cartridges, fired from an R5 rifle and 9mm pistol, were found on scene.

Two men and one female are in a stable condition in the Far East Rand Hospital.

Police have no witnesses at this stage.

Statements will be taken from the victims in hospital once they are in a fit condition.

A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened.

“Anyone who might have seen or heard anything, we are appealing to them to come forward with information,” said Sekele.

People have been asked to call the crime stop number on 08600 10111.
