Local schools scoop awards galore

Benoni schools have done the town proud by roping in a number of prestigious awards at the 2014 Grade 12 District Awards.

The annual awards function, hosted by O R Tambo International Airport on February 5, acknowledged the milestones reached by educators, matric learners and schools within the Ekurhuleni North District in the past year.

District director of Ekurhuleni North Ephraim Tau said the district positioned third best in its performance of the 15 districts in Gauteng, and ultimately achieved third best of all 81 districts in South Africa’s nine provinces.

Among the awards presented to local schools, Benoni High School was named the Top School in the public school category.

The school boasts a 100 per cent pass rate, 84.82 per cent distinctions and 75.57 per cent bachelors degree acceptance.

Unity Secondary School, in Daveyton, scooped the Academic Top School award, in the public prioritised schools category.

They obtained a 97.91 per cent pass rate, 48.16 per cent distinctions and 49.73 per cent bachelors degree acceptance.

Benoni Muslim School was awarded the Top Independent School title in the district.

A matriculant of Benoni Muslim School, Sabeeha Hassen, was the Top Learner from an independent school.

Awards were accepted by local schools in the following categories:

Most improved schools (public schools):

  • Gekombineerde Skool Noorderlig

Most Improved Schools (public prioritised schools):

  • William Hills Secondary School
  • Crystal Park High School

Schools with 100 per cent pass rate (independent schools):

  • Ashbury School
  • Kathstan College
  • St Francis College

Schools with 100 per cent pass rate (public schools):

  • Benoni High School
  • Wordsworth High School
  • Belvedere School

One hundred per cent pass rate for five or more consecutive years:

  • St Francis College (five years)
  • Wordsworth High School (five years)
  • Benoni High School (eight years)
  • Kathstan College (nine years)

District top 10 learners (public schools):

  • Liverpool High School, Haleema Dajee (fourth place)
  • Benoni High School, Ashleigh McCullum (third place)

District top 10 learners (public prioritised schools):

  • Hulwazi Secondary School, Mpho Malesa (fifth place)

The number of awards accepted by the best educators and learners, in their respective subjects:

(Public schools):

  • Hoërskool Hans Moore: 11 educators and one learner
  • Benoni High School: 19 educators and five learners
  • Wordsworth High School: two educators and one learner
  • Hoërskool Brandwag: one educator and one learner
  • Willowmoore High School: one educator and 11 learners

(public prioritised schools):

  • Hulwazi Secondary School: eight educators and five learners
  • Lesiba Secondary School: seven educators and four learners
  • Kingsway Secondary School: one learner
  • Mabuya Secondary Schools: one educator and one learner
  • Unity Secondary School three educators
  • William Hills Secondary School: two educators and one learner
  • Dinoto Secondary School: 11 learners.

Hulwazi Secondary School learner Mpho Malesa was presented with the OR Thambo International Airport Overall Achiever award.

General manager of O R Tambo International Airport Bongiwe Pitye congratulated matriculants on their achievements and encouraged them to further their education.

“Education is your passport to the future, which is very bright and full of opportunities which we advise you to grab with both hands,” said Pitye.
