Armed robbers make off with money from ATM bombing

Four men, armed with pistols and rifles, made off with an undisclosed amount of money after bombing an ATM in Tavern Love, in Daveyton, last night (February 10).

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said: “According to the owner of the tavern, he was about to close the shop when one of the suspects entered, pretending to buying something.”

She added that the explosion sounded while three of the accomplices were outside the establishment.

The three armed men entered the business and stole money from the ATM, as well as cash from the tavern’s tills.

The robbers took a key to a gold Honda Civic from one of the patrons, and hit another woman over the head with a gun.

The stolen vehicle was used as a getaway car, but was later recovered by police not far from the scene of the bombing.

No arrests had been made at the time of publication.

The condition of the woman who was struck over the head is not known at this stage.

A case of business robbery has been opened.
