Road conditions around school a hazard

An employee at the Lee Rand School and Benoni Educational College, in the Benoni CBD, resorted to the City Times after failed attempts to have the school's hazardous surroundings repaired.

Credit manager at the schools Ina Steyn, said she has reported the sidewalks of Cranbourne and Woburn avenues, which are full of holes and littered with bricks and other construction materials, to the metro since 2006.

She said children have sprained their ankles and teachers have fallen over these obstacles on the sidewalks.

She added that children have been hit by vehicles that speed down Woburn Avenue and the school appealed for zebra crossings and speed humps to be erected on this road.

Along with this, she said, the painting of parking spaces and road signs is not maintained and the school has been doing this, with paint donated to them.

They are also not able to take adequate photos of the school for marketing purposes, due to its untidy appearance.

She said further appointments were made by the metro, which proved fruitless.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the sidewalk repairs can only be addressed by means of resurfacing.

“The area is in the vicinity of a school and the area is utilised for parking, thus the repairs can be programmed only for December – once the school holidays have started,” he said.

He added that the road markings and signage will be addressed when the paint has been acquired and signage delivered.
