WARNING: There are fake uniformed Metro Police officers in Benoni

Motorists will have a hard time trusting uniformed Metro Police officers stopping them on the side of the road.

Police have warned that there are fake uniformed Metro Police officers in the area.

This follows a hijacking incident this morning (August 21), where the driver was stopped by a uniformed metro officer in Styx Road, at around 7am.

The ”officers” had parked an unmarked car on the side of the road and stopped a truck delivering cigarettes.

“After stopping the truck the fake officer asked to see the driver’s licence but, when the driver reached for his licence, the fake officer produced a firearm and instructed the driver to move to the passenger side,” said police spokesman Capt Mack Mngomezulu.

Mngomezulu said the fake officer then drove the truck to Makau Street, in Wattville.

Once there, another two men arrived in a truck and they offloaded boxes containing cigarettes worth R174 000 onto it.

No arrests have been made.

Mngomezulu suspects that this might be the criminals’ new modus operandi in the area.

He realises that such incidents will probably lead to people no longer trusting the police.

“We urge motorists to be alert at all times and advise them to drive to the nearest police station should they be stopped by suspicious-looking police officers,” said Mngomezulu.
